Ohio Visit 2023
It's Thursday night before labor Day weekend. WY and LL just recovered from yet another episode of a nasty illness (pink eye). Since we cancelled plans with friends (to avoid spreading germs), we decided to grab summer by the horns and do another roadtrip. Columbus was a city we've wanted to visit. Partly because of a great museum called COSI and we have relatives whom we love hanging out with.
(Caption: This is Dom's place. I have a soft spot for outdoor pool.)
With a destination in mind, we opened our Airbnb app, and in less than an hour, we booked a small little apartment in downtown Columbus, Ohio.
I was immediately anxious about spending too much since this trip wasn't budgeted for. It's always a trade off between creating memories and spending money. And since we've never regretted any travel decisions, I knew we'll be ok.
Work the next day was next level busy. I didn't take break and work straight until 11am. Good thing my terrific team held the fort down.
The drive down was smooth. We charged 4x on the way. Sometimes as little as 10 min. By the time we settled in it was 3:30 almost 4am. Was up at 9 ish next day.
Caption: painfully slow charger. But at least it works.Caption: lots of paintings and wall art along our building.

A Giant burrito
Happiness is filling up our bellies after driving 9 hours the night before.

Downtown Columbus is really clean and nice. Park is well maintained. Lots of picnic table with shelter. More art. Ping pong table. Wow.
Museum was awesome as expected.
Mice playing basketball was a slam dunk.
Underwater submarine and drones was great fun.
Lillypads were fun activities hosted by university students
WY did the unicycle on high wire. Brave!
King Tut exhibition was extraordinary for the grown ups. LL grasp the idea but was too long for him.
We wrap up the visit with LL spending a healthy amount of time in the play area while WY raided the museum giftshop.
Fun little story. I found this great little toddler area where I stretched out my legs and looked at my phone to relax a bit. Then I saw this kid whiz through his pants onto the floor. It was cute and funny. Then another older kid steps on the pee and spread it all over the place. I knew it was the end of my break when I saw that. I did let one of the museum staff know so the mess can be dealt with. That made my day.
Another highlight was dinner that night. We knew we wanted to stay in that night to conserve budget. We picked up a few frozen items from Traders Joe and made a super quick healthy and inexpensive dinner at our own apartment. The surprise was how good the food was. LL was able to enjoy a little TV while WY and I took our time to cook and chat about our day.
That night. WY connected with cousins and 五叔. Everyone happens to be in Columbus for 五叔s birthday! How lucky! We were invited to one of the cousins place the next day for the celebration.
The icing was there was an charger available that night. For a few dollars, we charged the car right at our doorstep.
Next morning, after breakfast at home, we ventured out to do some shopping. I got some court shoes for my upcoming badminton training (shopping at Dick's wasn't the best experience). Anyway, we then dropped off WY at j crew while I went to buy some sparkling wine to bring to our relatives. And they've done a nice job to make it accessible. Plenty of parking. EV charging. There's actually a Tesla store there too.
We picked up a quick lunch at shake Shack and ate in the car. We then dropped by Lego store for LL to have a look. WY picked up ice cream from the place next door.
Went to the beautiful home of WYs cousin that afternoon. Beautiful home with an outdoor pool. Wow. We were greeted by the most friendly people, dogs (6) and a baby.
Had a fun and enjoyable evening of chatting and being fed and playing with dogs and baby. We then charged our car up quickly and went back to the apartment.
Next morning, we had breakfast again at home, packed and started to head north. It was a scorcher. The drive was smoother. We were back to Canada around 6pm and was after an obligatory bowl of pho, we went home to get ready for work and school.
